The Abramtsevo Museum-Reserve is located 60 km northeast of Moscow, not far from Sergiev Posad. In 1843, Abramtsevo was acquired by the writer S.T. Aksakov, who created his best works here. Under Aksakov, the estate was visited by writers N.V. Gogol and I.S. Turgenev, historian M.P. Pogodin, actor M.S. Shchepkin, and other famous contemporaries.
In 1870, Abramtsevo was bought by the railway industrialist, artistic and theatrical figure S.I. Mamontov. Under Mamontov, V.D. Polenov, V.M. Vasnetsov, I.E. Repin, I.S. Ostroukhov, V.A. Serov, K.A. Korovin, M.V. Nesterov, M.A. Vrubel and other artists, musicians, and actors visited Abramtsevo. The creative community of these masters went down in art history as the Abramtsevo Art Circle.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the estate was nationalized and turned into a museum, but the artistic traditions of the Mamontov Circle were not interrupted. In the 20th century, artists I.E. Grabar, P.P. Konchalovsky, I.I. Mashkov, sculptors V.I. Mukhina, B.D. Korolev and many other representatives of creative professions lived and worked in Abramtsevo.
Nowadays, the territory of the Abramtsevo Museum-Reserve occupies about 50 hectares and includes architectural monuments of the XVIII and XIX centuries, a park and the picturesque surroundings of the Vori River. The collection of the museum-reserve contains more than 25 thousand exhibits: paintings, graphics, sculpture, works of decorative, applied and folk art, as well as photographs and archives of the former owners of the estate.
